Dana Cope began his political career by launching “Cope & Associates Political Consultants” in Washington, DC, which he founded in 1988. He gained political and entrepreneurial experience by starting this business while still attending Southern Methodist University.
While he worked on any project at Cope and Associates Political Consultants, Dana Cope was expected to supervise and train over 40 employees. The firm’s specialized consultants were responsible for handling fundraising, phone banks, direct mail, field coordination, and press relations. Cope and Associates was also asked to travel extensively and coordinate a national presidential campaign in Nevada, Arizona, and Utah from their Washington, DC office. Dana Cope sought an opportunity to strengthen the voice of SEANC, so in 2008 he guided a successful merger between SEANC and the Service Employees International Union (SEIU). SEANC is now known as SEIU Local 2008. More resources became available by affiliating with SEIU, which improved pay and benefits for North Carolina state workers.
Dana Cope continued to build the organization’s voice by making it a priority to strengthen the Employees Political Action Committee (EMPAC). In 2002 this organization was the 276th largest PAC in North Carolina. Since then he has increased the lobbying group to the 11th largest PAC in the state.
